Gmail claims Im using 50GB, backup is 17GB #359

What would be reason for the storage difference? I went to see what Google had to say about the storage use but it seems all he gb are on gmail, no photos, drive, etc

does the backup include attachments? does gmail duplicate email data? eg to keep the html view vs the raw data, or for labels, etc?
