:) . I never had the time to implement this, but had looked at this quite a bit in the past, "in theory" there is no real difficulty and all is readily available, but unsure how much work it will be to get all working well.

This magnetometer comes with factory calibration: https://www.st.com/en/mems-and-sensors/iis2mdc.html#documentation, I don't know if additional calibration is necessary. But if not, it might be a good alternative.

Mmmh, the thing is I think we would still need to compensate for many additional effects in addition to the sensor characteristics itself: effect of the metal on the breakout, the surrounding wires and currents, the batteries etc. I think this means that we will need to do a calibration 'in situ' inside the instrument with everything on, as described in the cave project.
