just curious: is there another reason besides missing time for not having a new release with the E-stop handling included?

No. No other reason.

(well, perhaps finding a laptop to run ktrans on)

If only ktrans worked under Wine/Linux.

Edit: or we had alternative compilers.

is 8.20 and 8.30 compatible? Our eval version of RoboGuide is only at 8.20

Karel is pretty fwd compatible, yes.

It will probably work.

your list in the original issue seems to imply it, but just to be sure: 9.1 just works (if setting the correct ktrans version)?
