Preliminary scenarios from BM 11/30/2021 #5

Based on the input from the core group workshop and from our sub-group discussion two weeks ago, Jonathan and I put together a few different preliminary alternatives for consideration and discussion on our call.

  1. Status quo – current (2021) regulations
  2. Keep existing regulations for each state, but drop the minimum size by 1 inch (not going lower than 15 inches) within each state
  3. Allow for 1 fish from the bag limit be at 16 inches, all other regulations for a state would remain the same (e.g., Massachusetts regulations under this scenario would be 1 fish at 16”, 4 fish at 17”, and season from May 23-Oct 9)
  4. Coastwide 18 inches, 4 fish, and season of May 15-Sept 15
    • If time allows, maybe do some sensitivity-type runs by modifying the size, bag, and season to assess impacts

Once we agree to the preliminary alternatives, we will work on these and present draft outcomes to the core group at the February workshop. We also need to keep in mind some of the other issues the core group has raised as interested components – discard mortality, compliance (education/enforcement), habitat, and productivity and distribution changes. Outside of the initial alternatives, we will also discuss model development/status since our last call, work needed to begin to conduct alternative scenarios, and timing of our next call.
