Installs, but doesn't show up under View > Toolbars (Win XP , SP2) #51

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install to default folder in C:\Program Files\StExBar
2. Explorer windows all closed - have tried reboot, also uninstall and
re-install - still nothing. 
3. Looked for registry values mentioned here:
http://tools.tortoisesvn.net/StExBarMore but they didn't exist (Win XP)

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expect to see StExBar under View Toolbars; instead it's identical to how
it was before installation. i.e. it looks like nothing has happened. 

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
1.6.0.187 on WinXP Pro SP2

Please provide any additional information below.

I'm using System Safety Monitor (but everything has been allowed) --
furthermore it's like the dll isn't being called, a new process called by
explorer would normally trigger SSM but it doesn't (only the installer does
and I allow that - the registry entries are made). If I didn't know I'd
installed it - I wouldn't think anything had changed.

If you create that value manually, does it then show up in explorer?

Windows+R (opens the "run" dialog), enter "regedt32.exe" to start the registry 
editor.
Go to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar

Right-click on the folder background on the left, choose "new->string".
In the "new entry" enter "{367D8B32-F9FD-474b-8E65-9E521F35DE99}". The 
doubleclick on
that new entry, enter "StExBar".

I have similar symptoms after installing under WinXP32 SP2. All the registry 
entries
are there, but the toolbar does not appear with the standard toolbars in the 
Windows
Explorer View menu. On the other hand, it appeared as a Taskbar toolbar...?! 
(see
image). Any idea how to move it?  -thanks

Open Internet Explorer, go to the options dialog.
Under the "programs" tab, click on "Manage add-ons"
make sure that "StExBar" is enabled.

It was already 'Enabled'. Toggled that, did not change anything.

remove the registry keys:
Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Discardable\PostSetup\Compone

and

under HKEY_CURRENT_USER (and maybe HKEY_LOCALMACHINE?)

Don't worry, they get recreated automatically, those are used by the shell to 
cache
extensions, and if that cache isn't rebuilt, changes in shell 
extensions/toolbars
won't take effect.

Tried that - thanks. But the StExBar toolbar is still in the Taskbar toolbars 
menu,
and wont move to the Windows Explorer View menu. I guess it prefers that place 
and
doesn't want to go somewhere else...

did you restart explorer (you might have to logoff/logon)?
Not sure, but I think it won't show new toolbars until it's restarted.

Yes - sorry I forgot to mention it. I also tried a full reboot. Still no 
success. I
have googled a bit to try to dig up info about the difference between the
Taskbar/Desktop toolbars and the Windows Explorer toolbars, but could not find
anything relevant :(

Here are 3 screenshots of my Windows Server 2008 box:

1. In the File menu, it do has "StEx" item

2. In the Toolbar right-click menu, nothing show up.

3. In the taskbar menu, it do has "StExBar" item on that.

I know the answer! (maybe)  I had all the same symptoms.  Go to Internet
Options/Advanced/Browsing/Enable third-party browser extensions.

It makes little sense that this would affect all windows explorer windows 
except the
taskbar, but there you have it.

Thanks Dan!  It had been killing me to figure out why it suddenly stopped 
working.  It turns out IT nuked 3rd party browser extensions and disabled the 
option.

Could you add a reference to this to the project home page? Perhaps a note at 
the top of installation, as "Requirements", that this software will not work 
unless the user enables Third Party Browser extensions in IE -- so people know 
to not even trying to install it, if that is something they can't do (for 
security or technical reasons). Also maybe a note about it in the 
troubleshooting section where it says to delete those registry browser enum 
keys?

(It took me a while to discover this issue explaining the problem.)

I enabled Third Party Browser extensions in IE

Then I had to run the StExBar setup program to Repair the most recent 
installation

Dunno why my other report was closed, but whatever works.

The fixes above (monkeying with the registry, monkeying with IE, etc) did not 
work.  Settings that needed to be enabled were already in place.  

I did get it to work, but, it was a rather stupid process to do so.  My system 
is 64-bit win7.  I had IE8 installed originally.  Then I installed StExBar 
(SEB) and all was well.  A while ago, I tried an update to IE9 but didn't like 
it as well so I removed the update.  It's possible that SEB stopped working 
after that... I can't recall.  I do know that when I went to use it this AM, it 
was pooched.

What I did was the following: Install SEB 32bit version - made IE8 happy.  I 
could enable the SEB in IE (though why I'd want it in IE is beyond me...).  
Then, I installed SEB 64bit version and, having enabled it in IE8, it was 
available in Explorer.  I was then able to delete the 32bit version and retain 
a system with the darn thing working in Explorer.

Hope this helps someone else!
