Need a domain name? #12

A dedicated domain name can make the project more formal.

Next question is, what name..?

census-explorer.hk? (too plain)

we need a codename

hxu commented 10 years ago

hkcens.us ?

hupili commented 10 years ago

nice suffix trick. could be one.

hxu commented 10 years ago

Actually if we do manage to get the facilities data in, then this is no longer just about the census, so maybe we should move away from including census in the name. On Jan 28, 2014 11:42 PM, "HU, Pili" notifications@github.com wrote:

I think census is a double-edged sword. In one way, it probably gives us high return in searches if people are looking specifically for the census data. On the other hand, I think in most people's mind the word "census" recalls boring spreadsheets and stats, so the bigger crowds would not relate to this.

Freda on Saturday mentioned a concept that I think is very cool: try to give a representation of the district in all its features, to basically reply the question "would I fit in if I moved there?". This appeals to me, because people move a lot in our city and if there was a quick way to check in which part of Hong Kong there are people more similar to us, where are better facilities and possibly the rental level is compatible with our finances, then I think the website would be used for more than just analyze cold stats but as a daily tool for making decisions on where to find the next flat. if this could work for you, then we could choose a domain that is more targeted for this sort of "search of a perfect neighborhood".

I have checked a few, all of the following don't exist yet:

www.neighborhoods.hk www.districtfinder.hk www.hkdistricts.com www.findyourhood.hk (this graphically could lend itself for a cute logo, using the pun on 'hood)

What do you guys think about discover.hk?

Nevermind, it's already taken.

Maybe we can first think of what's the core value of the project (in middle term).

Roughly speaking, we have a platform (complete methodology) to visualize geo-location with their attributes. Attributes come in form of a table, or a row/column of a table, or .... Geo-locations come in form of region, district, and area, instead of coordinates. This is one important factor. POCs coming in form of precise coordinates are not very useful for human consumption. You have to aggregate them in a coarse level.

It turns out the area division of census data set comes right for this purpose. Many other data sets can be pre-processed and abstracted in the same way. One example is the public facility data we are working on. Other candidates are like weather, bus/train stops, traffic volume, ... Those (coordinate, attribute) raw data can all be transformed to (area, attribute). Note that the area may not be constituency area in the end. Just treat it as a symbol. It can be any scale+division that is reasonable for visualization. It happened to be constituency area as a start.

In general, we can answer those questions given this abstraction:

What about something like this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gazetteer

A gazetteer is a geographical dictionary or directory used in conjunction with a map or atlas.[1] They typically contain information concerning the geographical makeup, social statistics and physical features of a country, region, or continent. Content of a gazetteer can include a subject's location, dimensions of peaks and waterways, population, GDP and literacy rate.

And there is a Chinese equivalent: 地方志

The only worry is that the English not a common name and most people may not know how to spell it.

hupili commented 10 years ago

I also fill that.. People can not remember.. I tried many common short English terms. It looks like many of them are taken, e.g. see, eye, insight, ...

hxu commented 10 years ago

The more I think about it, the more I think the name is appropriate, since the definition fits perfectly. Maybe the uniqueness of the word will make it easier to remember? If we can't think of a better name, I'll register gazetteer.hk the next few days. On Feb 21, 2014 8:05 PM, "HU, Pili" notifications@github.com wrote:
