Water environment database from the Norwegian Environmental Agency #165

The water environment database from the Norwegian Environment Agency (Vannmiljø) is a very important database populated with both species observations / quantitative samples from freshwater (and marine?) habitats. Although it is extensive, the it is largely unavailable to most researchers due to the download procedures from the original interface. The GBIF representation of this database is therefore often the best possible access point for research use of these data. Thiis is published as part of "Norwegian Biodiversity Information Centre - Other datasets" . However, there are several issues with the current GBIF (and artskart) representation of this database.

  1. The database is "hidden" inside the "Other datasets" dataset of NBIC, effectively eluding any possibility for writing informative metadata and also hiding it away.
  2. There are no links to waterbodyID in the GBIF dataset - this is important for research purposes since otherwise the user have to rely on spatial matching for getting additional environmental information linked to the water-body (both cumbersome and prone to errors).
  3. The database holds sampling event data, needs to be represented as such on the GBIF representation also.
  4. Numerous duplicates as present since institutions often publish the same data to both artskart/GBIF and to Vannmiljø

The first three problems should be more easily solved than the forth. I don't know the current procedure for downloading and publishing this data, but at least there is a API for vannmiljø available.

1 has a related issue https://github.com/gbif-norway/helpdesk/issues/6

I will draw Knut Anders' attention to this issue.

Hi! I do not think there are any technical problems with publishing the water environment database as a separate data set and I will initiate a dialog with the Environment Agency to sort out the practicalities.

I will need som help from you @rukayaj to register the agency as a data publisher in GBIF :0)
