Authorship basionym not in brackets #238

@thomasstjerne or @mdoering do you know the reason why the authorship name of a basionym is not in brackets sometimes?

The name parser documentation says it is 'usually' in brackets: The authorship in brackets. Usually the authorship of the original name, e.g the basionym. and that it is not in brackets when The authorship with no brackets. Usually the combination authorship. (I assume when the genus has changed?)

We received a help desk question regarding this where the following examples were shared, although it is apparently the case for many other Odonata species:

  1. https://www.gbif.org/species/1426058 (here another synonym species than the basionym is in brackets)
  2. https://www.gbif.org/species/1424067
  3. https://www.gbif.org/species/1429541

I cannot find any information on basionym status on catalogue of life which publishes the dataset from the Global Species Database of Odonata, so I assume it is an ingestion thing on our end?

It looks like COL does not have the Basionym of Lestes virens GBIF gets the Basionym from TaxRef and add it in the GBIF backbone build https://www.gbif.org/species/9011673. But the authorship is not changed (as this comes from the COL record) Might be something to look into for the extended COL

Thank you @thomasstjerne. Just to make sure - so it is not an interpretation thing on our end but rather a CoL issue?

GBIF has Lestes virens Charpentier, 1825 and Agrion virens Charpentier, 1825 as its basionym. The later as THomas says from TAXREF. On their page the brackets do exist: https://inpn.mnhn.fr/espece/cd_nom/65202

So this seems to be a TAXREF DwCA issue. I guess we should at least flag those basionyms that do not have authors in bracket.

The same is true for Libellula cecilia. Libellula nigra is coming from the IUCN redlist which does not show authorships at all on their site: Libellula nigra

no parser or backbone building issue, but all are problems in the sources - which we could detect and flag at least during a nub build.
