7 months ago The Backbone follows Catalogue of Life that have adopted a new Vertebrate classification that removes common taxa like Reptilia and raises former orders Squamata, Testudines and Crocodylia to class level.
In order to help users find reptiles, we generated the synonymy artificially. The idea is that users looking for Reptilia could still find the relevant classes.

I imagine this is by design but wanted to understand the logic as I'm mapping a project I'm working on to the backbone taxonomy. It looks like "Squamata" is treated as a class here (rather than an order?). That makes sense as I see Squamata is treated as a synonym of Reptilia. But the thing that strikes me as strange is that there is no value for Order for all these traditional reptiles then? Is this a temporary situation while concepts are being reconciled? Or maybe I don't fully understand the backbone taxonomy after reading through everything.
