Bryophyte names in the GBIF Backbone #251

Taking advantage of the conversation about the ScientificNameAuthorship in the GBIF Backbone (@vjrj @mdoering ;)), I would like to rescue a nomenclatural issue about Bryophyte names.

There was a discussion in Bryonet over the bryophytes names in GBIF, as it seems that the backbone is using a zoology-based naming system instead of the botanical. For instance, the scientific names do not include the original authority in brackets, or they include a year.

I know that the backbone is using Catalogue of Life as the main source of names, and in turn Catalogue of life is using MOST: Moss TROPICOS database as the source database for mosses (according to this site). But, at least is several examples I've analyzed, there is no match between the name that Catalogue of Life is assuming as accepted (ej. Orthotrichum acuminatum Philibert, 1881), and the accepted name from the source (ej. Orthotrichum acuminatum H. Philib.).

So, I'm wondering if Catalogue of Life and therefore GBIF are showing un-updates names. Is it an error or are they following different criteria? Is there any explanation?

Thank you!

Moss names in the Catalogue of Life have not been updated since 2004. We are about to update them from Bryonames which is already available in ChecklistBank: https://www.checklistbank.org/dataset/170394/about

This unfortunately won't make it into the new GBIF backbone we are releasing as I type.
