Why is this important: Italian collections are almost completely absent from GBIF and seem to be poorly represented in European-wide collections projects.

Comments: Vincenzo Vomero of Rome's Museo Civico di Zoologia also coordinates the Associazione Nazionale Musei Scientifici (ANMS), a society formed in 1972 to 'disseminate scientific museology in Italy and to connect the institutions and interested staff members.' Prof. Vomero attended the First Italian Citizen Science Conference and noted recent efforts to assess the size and taxonomic scope of Italian natural history collections in CollMap. The project received funding from the Italian Ministry of Instruction, Universities and Research as the part of the national biodiversity strategy and the intent to the Network Nazionale della Biodiversità.

The project has mapped the location of collections in Italy and developed a preliminary estimate of the collections, providing the basis (at minimum) for for metadata descriptions of 88 collections containing more than 25 million specimens.

I had a call with the ANMS we decided that they will become GRSciColl mediators for Italy. In addition to that, they first will send me a list of institutions to match to what we have in GRSciColl. Once the matches are checked, we will import institution information. The second step will be to match collection.
