2016 release of the PREDICTS database

Dataset link: http://dx.doi.org/10.5519/0066354

Region: Global

Taxon: 47,044 species

Type: sampling event

Why is this important: It is collated from published studies to form a reasonably representative database of comparable samples of biodiversity from multiple sites that differ in the nature or intensity of human impacts relating to land use.

Priority: high (essential)

Bibliographic reference: http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/ece3.2579

Comments: An open-access dataset of 3,250,404 measurements, which appears to be convertible to occurrence or even sampling event format. The major challenge would be ensuring proper attribution to the constituent data sources/published studies.

To mobilize new content, they have their own 'dataset catcher' http://www.predicts.org.uk/pages/contribute.html

In the next phase of their project, they are asking ecologists and conservationists to contribute (sampling-event) data from temporal comparisons, where terrestrial sites have been surveyed over time.

As an incentive to sharing data through PREDICTS, contributors may be recognised with authorship of the database.

They also do a great job motivating data sharing, by making clear that PREDICTS will help meet the need for next-generation biodiversity indicators used in measuring CBD Aichi Biodiversity targets. For more background to PREDICTS refer to http://www.predicts.org.uk/pages/background.html

NHM dataset page for PREDICTS http://data.nhm.ac.uk/dataset/metrics/the-2016-release-of-the-predicts-database makes it really easy to explore. The page also includes some nice altmetrics and an activity stream, which could serve as inspiration for GBIF in the current rework of its own dataset page.

@quicklizard99 @dhobern

Hi Lawrence,

I heard through the grapevine that Donald Hobern has been talking with Andy Purvis about mapping PREDICTS into the sampling-event format and publishing it through GBIF.org.

I found you on GitHub, and wanted to bring this repository to your attention. I'd like to welcome everybody involved in publishing PREDICTS through GBIF.org to track progress in this issue.

Kindly note that managing collaborative data mobilization using this GitHub repo is something new that GBIF is experimenting with. These swim lanes give an overview of what mobilization is currently ongoing in case you're interested.

Thanks for your attention and I look forward to hearing back from you. Kyle Braak
