Five-year bee survey on solar energy facilities in Minnesota #410

Open kcopas opened 5 months ago

kcopas commented 5 months ago

Dataset link: "available upon reasonable request"

Region: two Enel Green Power North America solar farms in southern Minnesota built on retired agricultural land

Taxon: Apidae and Halictidae

Type: sampling-event survey and monitoring

Why is this important: It's "a longitudinal field study across 5 years (2018–2022) to understand how insect communities respond to newly established habitat on solar energy sites in agricultural landscapes"; renewable-industry news item offers helpful summary.

Priority: Medium to high - high-priority taxa (per previous discussions with @albenson-usgs), important precedent for understanding biological impact of renewable energy development

Comments: ping @sformel-usgs

Dataholders contact information: Leroy J. Watson, Argonne National Laboratory

I wrote Leroy Walston to see if he is interested in sharing the data. Let's see what he says.

Just had a great meeting with Lee Walston. He was already a believer in GBIF as a user, but had never published to GBIF before. He thinks GBIF will be a good way to share the data. Next steps are:

  1. He will share a sample of the data with me to help him map to DwC
  2. He will continue to learn about the process and make sure all collaborators are ok with steps as we move along. The data will likely be published in increments as analysis continues.
