Carnivore endocasts

Dataset link: not yet available; only in 2025.

Region: South Africa

Taxon: Meerkat, slender mongoose, yellow mongoose

Type: metadata

Why is this important: These will be 3D scans of mongoose skulls: 30 specimens each of meerkats, slender mongoose, and yellow mongoose. These species vary significantly in terms of social and ecological complexity, which allows us to test various hypotheses related to cognitive evolution.

Priority: medium

Comments: These will be 3D scans of mongoose skulls, on loan from the National Museum in Bloemfontein, South Africa. We have not yet started the scanning, but I want to prepare data correctly for sharing, which is why I propose it early. To my understanding, there are very limited 3D morphometric data available on carnivore skulls. Would this be a feasible dataset to share, and would it be useful? We would be able to host the data on figshare. I don't have the data yet, so please do not post anything yet -- I am inquiring about the usefulness and feasibility of sharing these data once we have collected it. Thanks, Aliza
