Context

Hello. I used Xeno Canto a lot a while ago and am glad that there is this new format and organization looking out for it. I do have one suggestion. As someone who is looking for specific types of calls from specific species, I am sad that the context of the calls (i.e. territorial, song, call, hissing, etc.) is no longer easily available when doing a species search. This means that to find recordings of calls, or specific types of calls I will need to listen to hundreds of song and other recordings before I can find the ones I want. Would it be possible to bring this column back, even if many are left blank as it will remove hours of frustration. If this feature is available when sorting by species, please make it a bit more easy to find, as I cannot seem to figure out how to add this information column. Thank you and I do like the new setup and ease at citing specific recordings now!

I'm not sure what the best fit is. The MoF extension if/when indexed (seems wrong)? Currently we have no way of filtering as requested. The best option at this point is to simply do a text search as far as i can see: https://www.gbif.org/occurrence/search?q=hissing&dataset_key=b1047888-ae52-4179-9dd5-5448ea342a24

@baskaufs, is this something Audubon Core covers (or should cover)?

baskaufs commented 4 years ago

The Audubon Core Maintenance Group has spent considerable time recently working on terms specifically related to sound. Characterizing the type of sound is part of that work. We have some draft term proposals that we are discussing, and hope to have actual proposals submitted by the end of this year.

We would love to have input on this topic, so anyone who is interested can review notes from recent meetings and check the issue tracker for notifications of upcoming meetings where this topic will be discussed.

I should have also mentioned that segmentation of recordings is another thing we are working on. Annotations of those segments would make it much easier to find parts of interest without having to listen to a lengthy recording.
