Issue with homonyms #3936

Open SvMering opened 2 years ago

SvMering commented 2 years ago

While searching for occurrences of Arenaria oresbia W.W.Sm. from China https://www.gbif.org/species/7398059 (the accepted name is A. smithiana Mattf.), I noticed a few records from Mexico that were actually Arenaria oresbia Greenm. The former name is a later homonym of the latter and therefore illegitimate.

See these two examples: https://www.gbif.org/occurrence/2270509494 https://www.gbif.org/occurrence/1987011883 However, both specimen labels state the correct name Arenaria oresbia Greenm. and at least for the ASU specimen I know that the name appears to be correct on the image label AND in the ASU database, see https://swbiodiversity.org/seinet/collections/individual/index.php?occid=1877438

Apparently, there is some mix-up when the record with the correct name is provided by the collection to GBIF and then displayed in the GBIF portal using the GBIF backbone taxonomy, resulting in the erroneous assignment of the illegitimate homonym.

The occurrence published by Kew seems to be referring to the correct species: https://www.gbif.org/occurrence/912561607 (their identification extension shows Arenaria smithiana Mattf.).

I have contacted the publishers by email for the two other occurrences (I suspect one of them just needs to refresh their Darwin Core Archive).
