Ways to share sensitive species data? #4103

This is an exchange from Helpdesk. One of our publishers is making two datasets:

The first one will be registered and available on GBIF, the second one will be private on an IPT. The idea is that people interested would be given an account on the IPT and assigned to the dataset so they can access the data.

However, the publisher encountered several challenges with this approach:

  1. Handling the users is complicates, especially since he doesn't administer this IPT
  2. The private datasets don't appear anywhere. It isn't findable.

So I am logging the ideas they suggested/asked about:

I told them that these aren't possible but that I would loge the ideas. tagging @andrewrodrigues because it is about sensitive species and @mike-podolskiy90 because it involves the IPT.

To make the dataset visible, could they not make a registered public version of the dataset that is metadata only in the IPT and then refer to that metadata within the informationWithheld field so people know where to go to get it at least?

@tucotuco I think that this is the plan but the problem is that that private datasets don't have any landing page. For example, see this link: https://ipt.gbif.org/resource?r=ima_mrc. There is no title, no description, just:

Even if given the link, users wouldn't know what exactly they are looking at.

I understand that. I was only suggesting a solution to half the problem, which is to make "metadata of private dataset be visible", to make sure people had a way to know that the complete data were available.
