However, none of the other records have sex in their record. Is this an error, or was the information on males not available. It would be useful to mention this in the metadata.

Perhaps this is something missing from EML. Geographic, temporal and taxonomic coverage are detailed, but as far as I can see sex isn't. There are many cases when surveys will only focus on one sex or another. This might be because one sex is not present is undetectable, or the goal of the study only focused on one sex.
