searching institutionID #5348

I'm getting many inquiries about using RORs as identifiers for institutions. Here is an example of an occurrence that used one in institutionID: https://www.gbif.org/occurrence/4537288374

We have put in a request to be able to use RORs in EML entities: https://github.com/gbif/ipt/issues/2373

But it would also be cool to be able to coordinate occurrences across datasets via the ROR. Right now it looks like you can only do so with institutionCode, which can be ambiguous. Would it be possible to add institutionID as a searchable field in GBIF.org and the API? Right now, I don't think it's possible (apologies if I'm incorrect!).

Hi @sformel-usgs note that we use the content of the institutionID field to link occurrences to GRSciColl entries whenever possible. See also: https://scientific-collections.gbif.org/connected-systems#occurrences-published-on-gbif

Many institutions in GRSciColl have the ROR identifiers added to their entries. This allows to link, aggregate and search occurrence records based on the institution. See this example: https://scientific-collections.gbif.org/institution/a9ab29d6-f380-4193-967f-15a64abc09e7/specimens (and example of a specimen: https://scientific-collections.gbif.org/institution/a9ab29d6-f380-4193-967f-15a64abc09e7/specimens?entity=1702296700 in GRSciColl.

All of that to say that if the (material or specimen-related) occurrences have ROR identifiers, it would be great to add those identifiers to the relevant GRSciColl entries when possible.
