IUCN status not aligned between GBIF and IUCN due to IUCN API changes? #5554

We have had the following feedback in helpdesk:

I'm having some trouble retrieving accurate IUCN status data for some species and I was wondering if you could help me understand a couple of points.

I noticed that using this API endpoint (https://api.gbif.org/v1/species/2480320/iucnRedListCategory) for a given species, I get the status Least Concern. But when I check the species in the IUCN page (https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/22693777/256247816) I see the species is considered as "Near Threatened". I get the same result when querying the data with IUCN V4 API. It seems like the latest assessment is quite recent July 2024. So I was wondering:

a) How does the GBIF retrieve these status? Does it use the IUCN API (V3?) or does it have its own database? b) If it's the latter, how often does this get updated, or is there any plan to update it?

The IUCN status gets manually updated and we seem to not have the most recent version. Could this be updated, please?

Hi,

I'm the person who reached out about this issue. I'm just wondering if you will update the whole database, or just the species I sent as an example, because I have noticed other species with the same issue as well.

From a development perspective on my side, it would be good to know how frequent these manual updates happen, and if I should create similar issues in this channel if I encounter this issue again.

I really appreciate your attention on this, thanks.

@nnbuainain it would be all status' that would be updated at once, I believe. I will leave it to my colleague to answer how frequent the updates would be. If you encounter the issue again later, please feel free to log another issue in this repository.
