An explanation of the terms and filters sounds like a good idea to me and a good place for a popup. And possible a general introduction to what occurrence search can be used for. Relates to https://github.com/gbif/portal16/issues/311
@kcopas @dnoesgaard should we renamepreserved specimen
to preserved non-fossil specimen
. Might be unfortunate if the terminology elsewhere don't align?
Also is these description something that belongs in an FAQ? "What is a Basis of record?"
I'm going to have to defer to someone who knows more about preserved specimens...
But I agree that pop up for filters is a good idea!
Pop-up definitions
There are no explanations of the scope of the Basis of Record categories. I presume they do not overlap but Intuitively (say I was looking blind at results someone gave me) I would not realize that preserved specimens excluded fossils, as fossils are obviously preserved. I also don't know what a material sample or a machine observation might be. Pop-up definitions would help. Also you might want to change 'preserved specimen' to 'preserved extant specimen', or to 'preserved non-fossil specimen' if extant is thought too technical for your users.
