Clarify use of countries and areas

We use lists of countries quite a lot on the website. But yesterday I realised that I hadn't properly considering which to use when and where. So my question is: what lists should we use for

• gbif.org/country/ pages
• publisher search
• dataset publishing country
• resource search (@dnoesgaard you know how these are assigned)
• Occurrence search
• User registration country

I would think that they all had to be countries (so no international waters etc).

And that gbif.org/country/ is a smaller list of official countries All other lists are countries and areas (kosovo, taiwan etc included)

I'm a bit in doubt with User registration country as that might be used in reports about official countries.

Is this correct? And if so, do we have APIs that expose the two?

For resources it's "country or area" as it should be.

Ah sorry, right. It should be restricted to ISO 3166-1 countries, territories and area of geographical interest.
