Many apologies for the size of this; we had to touch an awful lot of code at the same time to make these changes. This should improve...

@harrysouthworth @gregridgeway if I don't hear anything in a couple of days I'll merge this.

Note that this segfaults on the travis docker infrastructure. However, the previous version segfaults on docker in the same place, so we don't think we've introduced anything new.

I appreciate that this is somewhat unsatisfactory...
