Small improvements #30

These are fixes for some issues that I've had recently. The most serious one is the 408 error, which is pretty consistent to me.

I've also had permissions issues due to running the same code as two different users (command line, and from web server).

Aside from that, a bit of debug logging, which I found convenient when troubleshooting timeouts, and generally trying to see what the API was doing.

Feel free to revert if you only want parts of this.
