Freeing designers from less important considerations is an important benefit of design systems. Fonts are definitely a big part of this - why should GC designers have to come up with fonts specific to their content? Is it ever going to be a distinct enough use that they should?
I suspect that the issue is more about people wanting a better looking/bigger font than is the default. That's perfectly reasonable but is a reason that should go away when better typography becomes standard.
Very related to #19 - Why? (One reasonable reason is because the particular project calls for a different font. For example, content for people looking for bereavement benefits might be very different from one that's trying to recruit students).
Here's a discussion where designers suggest 2-3 specified fonts is fine, no impact on branding.
I'm curious about existing systems though, particularly for diverse service providers like other governments.
Parks has a brand font and no one (aside from one guy from our CIO's office) ever had an issue with the brand font and the website font being different. It was never an issue - not even for campaign-related pages.
Thinking here about consistency and coherence across the experience
