when editing a Group with Navigator active the IDE locks up #34

When Navigator is active and I try to edit a group, the IDE locks up. This does not happen all of the time but only happens when Navigator is active. This error does happen with no detectable pattern. The card that I have has 2 different groups. The card that I am editing does not have any Behaviors. I am using Navigator 7.3 RC 1. Also, when Navigator is active the IDE seems to slow down.

So far I'm unable to replicate this. I'm using LC 8 on a Mac, with Nav 7.3rc1. I had no issues editing a group:

  1. When Navigator was set to reflect the top stack.
  2. When Navigator was set to reflect specifically the stack with the group I edited.
  3. When Navigator was set to reflect a different stack.

Do you have any other specifics you can give me to figure out what's going wrong?

Re: the IDE slowing down -- some slowing is inevitable because:

  1. The IDE has to send a message to Navigator whenever the selection changes -- but this should be very minor, and it's how the IDE manages all plugins and maybe some of its own functionality.
  2. When Navigator updates its display, that's an uninterruptible process. Navigator is very fast, so browsing stacks with even several thousand controls shouldn't be an issue (and the next update of Navigator will be about 40% faster still).

But it's supposed to be the case that Navigator is generally faster than whatever you might use in its place, for example the Project Browser. That said, if you have any specifics I'm happy to look into it. Speed is one of Navigator's reasons for existence, so I'm always open to figuring out how to make it faster.

I will reload LiveCode 8 and see what happens on my Windows 10 machine.

I will also send you a video so that you can see what else is happening. I will take me another day or so.

I did reinstall LC8.0 and this problem is still there, maybe worse.

I don’t think that it is the Navigator Plug-in. The IDE is actually sluggish.

It takes a second for menu pop-ups to come up. The problem with the Group edit failing with Navigator is still there. But again, it’s not navigator but some kind of interaction with the IDE when Navigator is enabled.

I will still do a video to show this.

There is really a problem with my OS and LiveCode, but I haven’t figured out what.

I’ll keep you updated as I explore.

OK, I just did another test to see what happens.

My procedure and results:

I found that the problem happens this way: When I open the application and Navigator is opened, everything seems to open just fine. If I use the view next to go to the card that I have the group on, I can edit the group with no problem.

If I use navigator to move to the card with the group on it, that is when I have the problem when I click on the group and then try to edit it- the IDE locks up and I can only quit the application.

I hope that you can repeat this procedure and see the same problem.

All I know is that this is repeatable on my system.

That's an interesting bug. Off the top of my head I don't have any idea what's going on there. I'm going to be away from my computer for the coming week, so I'll try to replicate this when I get back.
