The ps command on DSM5 has only works without any parameter, while the ps command on DSM6 only works with parameters like most or let's say all linux distributions do by default.
That's the problem. So I guess, you have to check the installed DSM version first and use ps with or without parameter, depending on the result of the installed version.
On DSM6, the version can be checked in /etc/VERSION file.
I have no DSM5 anymore, so I don't know, whether the VERSION file exists on DSM5 in the /etc folder.
