Tunnelblick gives the error “write to TUN/TAP : Input/output error (code=5)” #158

We have an OpenVPN system at work, which works well. We all run Windows, so
it's been fine thus far.

However, a new person has joined us, and wishes to connect using her Mac.
Trying to get it working is taking me to the end of my rope.

The recommended application is Tunnelblick, so I am trying to use that.

The problem? When you click "connect", it goes through the initial handshake
(apparently successfully), but then never gets as far as fully connected; it
just keeps sending the message "write to TUN/TAP : Input/output error
(code=5)". This is what I've done so far:

•Downloaded the application
•Double-click installed the application
•Clicked "Create and open folder"
•Dropped my certificate and config files, that work on my Windows box, into
the folder
•Opened Tunnelblick
•Clicked "details" then "connect"
•Watched the handshake fail as described
•Followed the steps in this post, received no change in behaviour (though I
was missing some of the folders, and changed them as seemed appropriate)
•Run ifconfig in a Terminal window and discovered that there isn't even a
tap0 interface!
•Tried Googling for 'tunnelblick "interface tap0 does not exist"' and been
underwhelmed with the results.
•Tried following the steps on this post, received no change in behaviour
•In a fit of desperation, I've even tried installing TunTapOSX to see if the
interface appeared. It didn't. I don't know what it did. There was no change in
behaviour.
Is there some incredibly obvious opening step I missed that would make
everything work? Should I have installed something else, like the VPN itself?
It's just acting as a client. Most people seem to only be having this problem
after they've had at least one success. Me? Not so much, apparently.

Alternatively, is there another application that won't send me the runaround?

Sorry, I lost track of this thread.

Please post your configuration file and the contents of the OpenVPN log.

X out anything sensitive (such as your server IP address).
