Create a short Panels 2 screencast #134

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Panels 2 is a great deal more complicated than Panels 1, even while having
a much more friendly and intuitive user interface. A screencast
walk-through of the basic features could be extremely useful. The task is
to create a short
(not more than 10 minutes) video to walk the viewer through the process of
creating a panel page containing a mini panel.

* Preparation: You will need an example site with panels 2 beta 1,
panels_tabs, and panels_carousel, and their dependencies installed. You
will also need to thoroughly familiarize yourself with panel pages and mini
panels.

* Create a mini panel:
* Use the tabs style
* Add some dummy content to each tab. Funny newspaper headlines are good.
Use your imagination. If you can't think of anything, Lorem Ipsum will work.

* Create a mini panel:
* Use the carousel style
* Add enough content to loop through the carousel

* Create a panel page:
* Use the two column stacked layout
* Add some dummy content to the top, perhaps a lead in story.
* Add the tabs styled mini panel to the left pane.
* Add the carousel styled mini panel to the right pane.
* Leave the bottom panel empty or close it off with more dummy text.

* Post the resulting screencast in the videos and slides section of the
handbook and link to it from http://groups.drupal.org/panels .

Resources:
Drupal's screencast guidelines are at http://drupal.org/node/62196 and must
be followed.

birdmanx35, this task is yours (that sure was fast). Please post your work to
http://drupal.org/node/208479

Hehe, Merlin knew I had my eyes on it, so he let me know on IRC.

This will be done this weekend.

leachim6: I'm sorry, but this task has already been claimed (though I realize I
forgot to set the status as claimed). birdmanx35 has a valid claim, however, so
you'll need to pick another task. Sorry for the confusion.

No Problem

Okay, here's the deal. The program I was planning on using is actually
shareware, and
it seems there is no open source alternative.

Now, I was planning on buying the MacHeist bundle anyway, which include Snapz
Pro X,
but Snapz is going to be unlocked in 20,00k dollars. If it's unlocked by
Tuesday or
Wednesday, I know I can get this done by (or perhaps slightly after) the due
date.

However, if it looks like it won't be unlocked in time, then I will give up
this task.

Apologies, I really want to do this. I'll post updates as they come.

On second thought, I think I have to unclaim this task. It's selfish for me to
keep
it, especially since I already have three tasks done.

If you can get this done on or near the due date I think it's fine for you to
hold
it. But I'm surprised you can find free screencasting software. If you're
using a
mac, check with dmitrig01 (if you haven't already) because I think he uses a
mac and
has done screencasts before.

So, if you want to keep this that's fine with me. If you have already done a
script
or outline you could post that now and we could review that while you're
figuring out
what to do about software.

But, if you really want to unclaim yourself, just let us know and we'll open
this
back up.

I think I'll wait till tomorrow to decide (since posting they've gotten down to
$18k needed).

@aclight, actually there are no shareware programs I know of for mac in this
arena.
Dmitri (and myself) use iShowU which is not a free program ($20).

@birdmanx, ping me in IRC and I'll hook you up with software to get the job
done ASAP.

Good news!

Apparently, Snapz Pro X's demo has 15 days of full functionality, so I'll use
that
today, as I have a SNOW DAY!

I'll get this done this afternoon, should be able to do it pretty quickly.

Mini panels is currently broken in the latest release, so Merlin gave me the go
ahead
to do a more generic videocast. I should have it up tonight.

Overall very useful. I guess I would like to see a bit more of the other
functionality (what are the legacy bits, etc). The examples I think were good.
The
bit at the start on versioning was a little confusing (not sure what you meant
with
the beta version) but that is not major.

I'd appreciate some review, or a decision on this one. There is also some
review at
the blip.tv comment page, by a Rob Loach.

maintainer has blessed it so this task is complete.

I guess you have to upload it to a Google site too, so here it is:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6593858265562117803

(it's not yet processed, but the email they sent me said that it would be there
when
it's available).
