This is not something I can reproduce, obviously. First, check if you have any
programs installed that change the behavior of other apps, and disable them and
see if the problem persists.

Same here.. MBP 15" 2.66 GHz Core i7, 4 GB RAM, Mac OS X 10.8.4.
Opening a 280kb JPEG image takes around 6 seconds. Subsequent images are loaded
almost instantaneously.

I also have same problem. When trying to open .jpg file it takes very long time
with Xee 3.0.1. But with Xee 3.0 everything is Ok. So, went back to 3.0.

Is this on a machine with GeForce graphics?

I'm also running v3.0.1, using NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB

This may be caused by a workaround for another bug on GeForce GPUs, which may
actually be in the GeForce driver itself. I do not currently have the hardware
to test and debug it properly, unfortunately, so I can do little to fix it
properly at this point.

Hmmm, that's too bad.. Could you provide a download link to v3.0, so I can try
to see if the workaround is the cause of the problem?

Could somebody test and see if http://wakaba.c3.cx/releases/mac/Xee3.0.2.zip
solves the problem?

It's still quite a bit slower than v3.0 (4 seconds vs. 1)

Ok, let's try one more thing. Thing is, this slowness is probably caused by a
workaround for a crash that seems to happen only on GeForce. I removed the
workaround and made a guess at what might fix the crash itself:
http://wakaba.c3.cx/releases/mac/Xee3.0.3.zip
The problem is, I can't test it since I don't have a GeForce. Also, the crash
is sort of rare. If somebody could give this some really heavy testing, that
would be useful. I think it might trigger when opening an image, but I am not
sure.

Success! This one seems to work fine with the couple of images I've thrown at
it.

It still needs to be tested to make sure it doesn't randomly crash, though.

Is the crash reproducible with a specific image or filetype? If you could
provide me with some test images, I'd be happy to test them for you..

No, it is completely random as far as I know. The only thing to do is to keep
opening things.

I've tested it with many different kind of images and it never crashes.
Probably it depends of certain model of graphic or system.
But overall feeling is not so good from this version. As others mentioned
before, it much less responsive, many images loading with delay. And that
annoying effect while image is loading!!! I work a lot of time with images and
very quickly eyes become tired because of this effect. I bought Xee 3 but now
I realized I can't use it :-(
I remember many years ago I was using ACDSee 2.43 on PC. It was such a nice
viewer! It was fast, lightweight and without any annoying effects.

I might add other options for loading effects later, but now I just need to get
things working right.
Generally, you should not see the loading effect much, as images will be
pre-loaded while browsing, unless you skip around very fast.
(Also, try changing window style, as that changes the brightness also.)

Ok, thank you. I'll wait.
I tried with dark style and it looks better, effect is not so annoying.
But don't you think that this effect itself make loading picture more slow?
Yes, sometime I have to search through many pictures fast and than that effect
appear very often.
In the future it would be nice to have possibility in full screen mode to
change background color independently from the window style. For example I
prefer regular style but for the full screen I want dark background.
