@joshuawoodward owns the domain
It's been a month since this domain expired and the entire Firefly project went offline. I tried to buy the domain on GoDaddy.com myself (Google Domains doesn't support .events domains), but it is still reserved. I have not been able to get any response from Josh on the issue.
Just seeing this now, sorry guys. I don't see this domain in my admin panel to renew/release On Jul 11, 2015 1:54 PM, "Michael Prentice" notifications@github.com wrote:

It may be in limbo On Jul 11, 2015 2:12 PM, "Michael Prentice" notifications@github.com wrote:

Can you do it via http://mya.godaddy.com/myrenewals/myRenewals.aspx?ci=85920&isc=GPPT05K500&tab=domains ?
@joshuawoodward
It's not in that list :/ On Jul 12, 2015 2:04 AM, "Sebastian Mauer" notifications@github.com wrote:

I'm assuming this doesn't help, either? https://uk.godaddy.com/help/recovering-expired-domain-names-5018
It does show up there, there is a $80 recovery fee :/ I see gdg-x.com also expired, is that used by any service? On Jul 12, 2015 7:08 AM, "G. Hussain Chinoy" notifications@github.com wrote:

My guess is the main reason to have the .com was to get the G+ page vanity name without a required suffix. But I don't know for sure.
I wouldn't pay the recovery fee. Am 12.07.2015 19:20 schrieb "Stefan Hoth" notifications@github.com:

Why don't you guys take this opportunity to change the domain? Are .go domains already being commercialized?
Cheers

gdg-x.org
is available for $7.99 or so. If we don't mind switching from gdg-x.com
, I can pick it up.
As for gdg.events
, I believe that Adriana would like to pay for the $80 recovery fee and have the domain transferred to her.
I just spoke with GoDaddy support. gdg.events was not in fact registered with GoDaddy. It was registered by "Go Montenegro Domains,LLC".
This registrar has now moved to http://www.domainspricedright.com/
I tried to contact Josh via Hangouts with this information to see if he had an account with them, but I haven't received a response.
Is there anyone else who might have registered the gdg.events domain with http://www.gomontenegrodomains.com/ ?
GoDaddy support also said that the domain should normally be available 3 months after it expires. This means that we would have another month to wait if we aren't able to get access to the domain on Domains Priced Right.
/cc @mauimauer @friedger any chance you registered them or have the account data?
Josh says that Martin registered the domain and transferred it to Josh's GoDaddy account. He suggests that we should just ditch the domain and go with something else.
https://hub.gdgx.io and https://cloud.gdgx.io are valid. Perhaps we can just add an https://events.gdgx.io ?
Who owns gdgx.io
?
I think it is ok to wait and re-register.

@Splaktar Sebastian owns it: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=whois+gdgx.io&t=ffab&ia=whois
It looks like we can use the gdgroups.org
domain that Van owns (Adriana in control of it atm). I'm working on getting access to manage the DNS, but they are still learning the brand new GoDaddy account sharing features. Hopefully that will be worked out on Monday.
I've done some testing with one of my personal domains and now know the A
and CNAME
configuration that will be needed other than having the full list of possible prefixes (android, androidwear, angularjs, developer, studyjam, etc).
Firefly on http://gdgroups.org is live!
Hopefully we can get gdg.events back soon and eventually keep Firefly there and transition this gdgroups.org
to serve as a more general GDG community-based site. But we'll probably need to keep Firefly on gdgroups.org
at least through DevFest season.
Makes sense.

I was just able to pick up http://gdg.events again for $30 from Google Domains!
Wow. Great news! What should we do now? Should we move back to this domain?
I think gdg.events is good for event series, gdgroups.org is good for the directory.
Hm, not sure what to do.. Am 02.10.2015 9:02 nachm. schrieb "Said Tahsin Dane" < notifications@github.com>:

gdg.events is a really cool domain for events.
But I think our first priority is something bigger that fits in gdgroups.org If we think that we have a really few number of devs, it will be harder to maintain both.
We can use gdg. events for the url shortner Am 02.10.2015 10:11 nachm. schrieb "Said Tahsin Dane" < notifications@github.com>:
