Inspiration

We have been working with web technologies from the start of our college. My(Diganta Kr Banik) first PR which was merged was to a project which focus on accessibility of the web. With that though, we decided to make something that would some how benefit people and make it easier for them to access web. Upon exploring more, we saw how it can be difficult for people with dyslexia and color blindness to access the true power and beauty of the web. With that thought in mind, we decided to create Dino - a chrome extension that allows you to surf your favorite web pages the way you like! Dino helps adjust font sizes, colors, texts and even reads out the web page to you! So this is our small contribution to towards our friends with dyslexia and color blindness.

What it does

  1. FONT SIZE: Change the font size of the web page using the various sizes available.
  2. FONT STYLE: Change the font style of the web page from the selected dyslexia friendly fonts. Source : https://creativemarket.com/blog/best-fonts-for-dsylexia
  3. IMAGES: Remove Images, Read out alt texts of images.
  4. LISTEN TO THE WEB PAGE.
  5. Control colors on the page.
  6. Highlight links and paragraphs.

Challenges you ran into

This our first time working and building a chrome extension. Firstly, it took us some time to read and understand how extensions work and the ways to create them. A lot of time went into overcoming the connection problem between background files and content scripts.

Anything else?

We want to work on this project and further in later days bring more features and functionalities so that we can help our friends with dyslexia and color blindness. A special thank you to GDG Kolkata for providing us with this opportunity.
