This one would be tricky and it seems it would be a distraction for drivers.
Less distracting than typing out the message maybe, but still very distracting.
I would like to hear from others on this. If you are interested in this new
feature, star the issue and post a comment either for or against. In many
states it is now illegal to text while driving. I would hate to enable bad
behavior like that.
I would prefer to implement a canned auto responder similar to the one Motorola
has when you ignore a phone call. It could pop up a short list of canned
responses such as "I am driving now and I will respond when I get to my
destination". When a SMS comes in, a dialog box could pop up during the delay
time. It would give the user the option to ignore or listen now. If the user
ignores, then the responder dialog would pop up. Something like that anyway.
Still not sure I like this because it will be a distraction.
Even if we get many people wanting this feature and we decide to implement, it
is hard to keep if from being a frustration. I have tried many speech-to-text
applications on Android and Windows. The good ones work maybe 3/4 of the time
if you are in a nice quiet environment and enunciate very clearly but that 1/4
is very frustrating. In my opinion if someone sends you a text that requires a
response you are better to just wait until you stop or voice call them back. I
think the proposed feature sounds much better than it would actually be in the
real world and that would lead to negative ratings and comments.
