Hello! Some users don't like chats, other do. Some would like to spend less time following new messages... Please, allow a user to disable babble chat in user's Discourse settings! Regards

Totally agree with the above. I need an op-out feature for the sake of my sanity!

Thanks.

Heh, sure. Could you give me a hint of what would be best? Simply removing the 'unread' icon, or removing the chat button entirely?

Removing the chat button entirely is a bit tough because it means that people who think they're getting your attention by @mentioning you in the chat, well, aren't.

Maybe I can make a setting which disables the 'unread messages' icon, so that you only get a notification there when you're @mentioned or someone sends you a direct message? Seems like that would cut down on the annoying factor quite a bit, while still allowing people to get ahold of you when they feel its important.

Also, can I confirm which branch you're on at the moment? Is your forum using the master branch, or the new experimental 'private messages' functionality, with an icon which looks like this?

There is now a user-level option for this under preferences > interface.
