First, it switches all SCSS color variables to CSS custom properties. This is to future-proof the plugin to changes in how plugin stylesheets are going to be compiled in core, it helps improve compatibility with multiple themes and color schemes. (I will post a more detailed note for this on meta.)
Second, the count was showing as white on slightly less with for me (on Safari and Chrome), so I propose we use primary-medium instead of secondary there.
