Add some on the Atlantic hurricane reanalysis project and reanalysis of tornado events #4

In our discussion of temporal bias, it might also be helpful to talk about what is being done to try to improve this. One example is an ongoing re-analysis of the Atlantic hurricane records back to at least 1900. Chris Landsea is leading the effort on this. The idea is that, to be able to test for trends in the data over time (for example, for climatological research), it's important to make sure the data is as comparable as possible over time. It takes a lot of work and a clever approach, but I think he's been doing work to try to make the Atlantic tropical cyclone database more comparable, a process called "re-analysis". Some papers on this project to check are:

Also related to temporal bias from the tropical cyclone perspective: https://journals.ametsoc.org/jcli/article/25/13/4461/33570 https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1029/2007EO180001

I think that similar work has been done for the tornado listings in the NOAA Storm Events database, in particular to help in comparing periods before and after the Fujita scale was adopted, and then before and after it was changed.

Here's some on the adoption of the Fujita scale and then change to the enhanced Fujita scale, and how that might have complicated comparing tornadoes over time (particularly in terms of their strengths, which I think are included in the NOAA Storm Events listings):

I added a paragraph about this topic in the temporal bias section under the title "Current techniques for improvement (re-analysis)" on the outline document. I wove in concepts from most of these articles but I can add more detail if you think I should.

I will push up these updates today if you would like to take a look before our meeting.
