[x] In further work with Resistance Lab, we produced and ran an online panel about the threat of Tasers to residents of Greater Manchester. This was based on our research work and report from 2019 [link], and featured an amazing panel of speakers who have been working on this issue for years. The event is still on YouTube if you want to watch it!

[x] The Trans Dimension is a key step to getting our award-winning PlaceCal [link out to info about placecal] technology back on the road with an extremely generous donation from Lankelly Chase. We just did our first “proper” release thanks to loads of work from our lovely new developer Alexandria and we will have more to share on this soon.
[x] > "In some respects group therapy, masked as citizen participation, should be on the lowest rung of the ladder because it is both dishonest and arrogant [...] people are brought together to help them 'adjust their values and attitudes to those of the larger society'", diverting them from the real issues ...
[x] The final rung in this category -- 'placation' -- is the natural extension of this, in which "a few hand-picked 'worthy' poor [are placed] on boards of Community Action Agencies or on public bodies like the board of education, police commission, or housing authorities". Again, this is a great start to genuine community co-production. But again, as the effort involved in making co-production happen increases, so does the potential for bigger perceived wastes of time and rifts. In the most extreme examples, dedicated community activists will get invited to join these boards, spend years feeling like they're banging their head against the wall, and leave with renewed division and animosity, often on ambiguous and hurtful terms. In other words: don't put people on your board unless you're really willing to treat them as you would anyone else 'within' the existing organisation.
[x] - Citizen control: "A degree of power (or control) which guarantees that participants can govern a program or an institution, [and] be in full charge of policy and managerial aspects ... A neighbourhood corporation with no intermediaries between it and the source of funds is the model most frequently advocated."
[x] > Many people need a few sessions to get the hang of using software, and many tech communities don’t really understand this human development aspect. Tech works most effectively when it is relevant to people's everyday lives, especially in [Hulme and Moss Side], where many people are affected by poverty, loneliness and alienation.
[x] The Deficit or ‘medical’ model attributes problems to an individual’s deviations from ‘the norm’: in other words, ‘abnormal’ individuals are assumed to have a ‘deficit’ of some kind. Franklin {{<rawhtml>}}<span class="citation" data-cites="franklin1999">(1999)</span>{{</rawhtml>}}, speaking in a technology context, puts this bluntly: ‘people are seen as sources of problems, while technology is seen as a source of solutions’. By contrast, the social model sees disability as created by the individual’s relationship to the social environment, and argues that deficit-based approaches actually _disable_ communities by implying ‘communities in and of themselves are not competent [and] require the expertise of professionals’ {{<rawhtml>}}<span class="citation" data-cites="durie2013">(Durie & Wyatt, 2013)</span>{{</rawhtml>}}.
[x] I was a bit low and my doctor asked me about stuff I liked doing and I wasn’t sure. We had a look at the things that were happening [on PlaceCal] and I always wanted to do some craft or sewing work. I bought a machine ages ago but didn’t have the confidence to know what to do. Now I am learning to make all sorts of things. I can repair stuff like holes and zips and other things. My doctor thinks the sewing group might have been what helped me stop needing my antidepressants – I think they helped too.
