Hmmm... interesting this sleep thing actually seems to be Pi5 related, I followed the instructions in the URL I posted on Bookworm on a Pi3 and it worked as expected. However I just repeated the steps on a Pi5 and was unable to get it to work without adding the sleep 8 to kiosk.sh
I laughed when I saw this on my YouTube feed because I had JUST set this up on a raspberry pi for a project for a friend. I was following this instruction https://www.scalzotto.nl/posts/raspberry-pi-kiosk/ which doesn't require a sleep in the service. I believe the key is setting it up as a user service, and then following the directions on hooking it into the X Session.
One issue I've been fighting and haven't found a fix for yet, when I start the kiosk service manually the chromium window that's launched has focus, however on boot for some reason it doesn't have focus, which causes some issues for the project I'm working on (which needs the window to have focus, but doesn't have traditional inputs connected like a mouse or keyboard which would easily let you change focus)
