The definition of GO:0008329 : signaling pattern recognition receptor activity needs updating:

Combining with a molecular pattern based on a repeating or polymeric structure, such as a polysaccharide or peptidoglycan, and transmitting the signal within the cell to initiate a change in cell activity. Such molecular patterns are sometimes associated with potential pathogens.

As not everything a PPR binds to has a a repeating or polymeric structure. Suggested new definition:

Combining with a pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP), a structure conserved among microbial species, or damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMP), an endogenous molecule released from damaged cells, to initiate a pattern recognition receptor signaling pathway. PMID:20303872

Note that the name of cell surface pattern recognition receptor signaling pathway (GO:0002752) needs updating in line with this.
