NTR:detection of noxious chemical stimulus #11021

Closed gocentral closed 9 years ago

Hi,

Could I request a biological process term "detection of noxious chemical stimulus" as a child_of "GO:0009593 detection of chemical stimulus"

Definition:The series of events in which a harmful chemical stimulus is received by a cell and converted into a molecular signal.

(For annotating the D.mel TrpA1 gene. Kang, K., Pulver, S.R., Panzano, V.C., Chang, E.C., Griffith, L.C., Theobald, D.L., Garrity, P.A. (2010). Analysis of Drosophila TRPA1 reveals an ancient origin for human chemical nociception. Nature 464(7288): 597--600. PMID:20237474.)

Thanks.

Hi Helen,

I think the term you're looking for is GO:0050968 'detection of chemical stimulus involved in sensory perception of pain' (is_a 'detection of chemical stimulus involved in sensory perception', part_of 'sensory perception of pain'). Its definition is: "The series of events involved in the perception of pain in which a chemical stimulus is received and converted into a molecular signal." so nearly identical to the one you suggested.

The paper refers to chemical nociception - we have 'nociception' as an exact synonym of 'sensory perception of pain', so perhaps I could add the following synonyms to the following existing children of 'sensory perception of pain':

'detection of chemical stimulus involved in sensory perception of pain' -> chemical nociception 'detection of electrical stimulus involved in sensory perception of pain' -> ? 'detection of mechanical stimulus involved in sensory perception of pain' -> mechanical nociception 'detection of temperature stimulus involved in sensory perception of pain' -> thermal nociception

I haven't found examples of 'electrical [or electric] nociception' - is this wording ever used in fly papers?

Let me know what you think. Cheers, Paola.

Hi Paola,

I am happy with using GO:0050968 'detection of chemical stimulus involved in sensory perception of pain'.

This again come from a user request and at the time I ran the suggestion 'detection of chemical stimulus involved in sensory perception of pain' and he said that would be OK, although he would prefer a term not using pain. I think he'll be happy with adding synonyms and I am too.

On the subject of electrical nociception, I can't find this exact wording, but I have found electrical shock being used to condition a response in Drosophila (mainly conditioned odor avoidance) e.g. PMID:19586944. Certainly flies do not like electric shock and exhibit nociceptive-like behavior.

Thanks Helen. I'll add the synonyms. Will close ticket when done.
