That all sounds good and sensible to me. Shall I plan out the terms and definitions and post them for comment?
Jen

Thanks Jen- btw: the trichome differentiation/morphogenesis relationships are set out as they currently exist. It may be that SF:825413 (Development terms) affects this parentage.
Thanks Becky

Hi Becky,
That turned out to be quite straight forward to I just got on and did it. Here are the changes I made:
1)
term: hair cell differentiation goid: GO:0042491 definition: The processes whereby a relatively unspecialized cell acquires specialized features of a hair cell. Hair cells are found in the epithelial lining of the labyrinth of the inner ear and mediate hearing and balance. definition_reference: GO:jl definition_reference: http://cancerweb.ncl.ac.uk/
Changed to:
hair cell differentiation ; GO:0042491 def: The processes whereby a relatively unspecialized cell acquires specialized features of a hair cell.
2)
Changed definitions below so that they are sensu Magnoliophyta, since they are under leaf development anyway.
trichome differentiation (sensu Magnoliophyta) ; GO:0010026 def: Differentiation of trichomes from single epidermal cell as in flowering plants.
trichome morphogenesis (sensu Magnoliophyta) ; GO:001009 def: The formation and development of plant hair cells (trichomes), as in flowering plants.
trichome branching (sensu Magnoliophyta) ; GO:0010091 def: The processes involved in the formation of branches in plant hair cells (trichomes), as in flowering plants.
Parentage:
leaf morphogenesis ; GO:0009965 -<trichome differentiation (sensu Magnoliophyta) ; GO:0010026 --<trichome morphogenesis (sensu Magnoliophyta) ; GO:001009 ---%trichome branching (sensu Magnoliophyta) ; GO:0010091
Used to be also: epidermal cell differentiation ; GO:0009913 -%trichome differentiation (sensu Magnoliophyta) ; GO:0010026
Now: epidermal cell differentiation ; GO:0009913 -%hair cell differentiation ; GO:0042491 --%trichome differentiation ; GO:0048271 ---<trichome morphogenesis ; GO:0048272 ----%trichome morphogenesis (sensu Magnoliophyta) ; GO:001009 ----<trichome branching ; GO:0048274 ----<trichome branching (sensu Magnoliophyta) ; GO:0010091 ---%trichome differentiation (sensu Magnoliophyta) ; GO:0010026 ----<trichome morphogenesis (sensu Magnoliophyta) ; GO:001009 -----<trichome branching (sensu Magnoliophyta) ; GO:0010091
New generic terms: trichome differentiation ; GO:0048271 def: Differentiation of trichomes from single epidermal cell.
trichome morphogenesis ; GO:0048272 def: The formation and development of plant hair cells (trichomes)
trichome branching ; GO:0048274 def: The processes involved in the formation of branches in plant hair cells (trichomes).

Hi,
One of our curators pointed out that the hair and trichome terms with their current definitions can't be used for flies.
Can the def of hair cell differentiation be shortened to chop-out the bit about ears:
term: hair cell differentiation goid: GO:0042491 definition: The processes whereby a relatively unspecialized cell acquires specialized features of a hair cell. Hair cells are found in the epithelial lining of the labyrinth of the inner ear and mediate hearing and balance. definition_reference: GO:jl definition_reference: http://cancerweb.ncl.ac.uk/
Also the trichome terms are all part of leaf morphogenesis.
leaf morphogenesis ; GO:0009965 --<trichome differentiation ; GO:0010026 ----<trichome morphogenesis ; GO:0010090 ------%trichome branching ; GO:0010091
Could we make these existing terms 'sensu plant [sorry- not sure which type it should be] and add in some general trichome terms.
Maybe once the definition of hair cell differentiation has been modified, the general trichome differentiation term could be a child of this:
epidermal cell differentiation --%hair cell differentiation ----%trichome differentiation ------%trichome differentiation [sensu plant] ; GO:0010026 --------<trichome morphogenesis [sensu plant] ; GO:0010090 -----------%trichome branching [sensu plant] ; GO:0010091 ------<trichome morphogenesis ; GO:new --------<trichome morphogenesis [sensu plant] ; GO:0010090 -----------%trichome branching [sensu plant] ; GO:0010091 ----<hair cell fate commitment ----<regulation of hair cell differentiation
leaf morphogenesis ; GO:0009965 --<tricome differentiation [sensu plant] ; GO:0010026
Does this work ok for plants?
Becky
