I’ve talked this over with Birgit, and she agrees that the definition of Ire1 complex ; GO:1990332 should be updated to make it clearer that this complex is an IRE1 dimer.

Based on the current definition, GO:1990332 also needs the additional parent: is_a: ‘endoplasmic reticulum part ; GO:0044432.

FROM: A type-I transmembrane protein complex located in the endoplasmic reticulum which forms in response to the accumulation of unfolded protein in the ER and evokes the unfolded protein response (UPR) by splicing the mRNA encoding master transcriptional regulators of the UPR, Hac. It cleaves a single phosphodiester bond in each of two RNA hairpins (with non-specific base paired stems and loops of consensus sequence CNCNNGN, where N is any base) to remove an intervening intron from the target transcript. Its catalytic activity depends on its conformation as a dimer and oligomer. TO: A type-I transmembrane protein complex located in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) consisting of an IRE1-IRE1 dimer, which forms in response to the accumulation of unfolded protein in the ER. The dimeric complex has endoribonuclease (RNase) activity and evokes the unfolded protein response (UPR) by cleaving an intron of a mRNA coding for the transcription factor HAC1 in yeast or XBP1 in mammals; the complex cleaves a single phosphodiester bond in each of two RNA hairpins (with non-specific base paired stems and loops of consensus sequence CNCNNGN, where N is any base) to remove an intervening intron from the target transcript. Will do the edits next week.

Edits done. Just checking with Birgit whether the other current parent holds true: is_a: serine/threonine protein kinase complex

e.g. whether the complex has kinase activity as a dimer.

Yes, dimer has serine/threonine protein kinase activity:

From EBI-8872439: Properties: Dimerization/oligomerization* promotes the juxtapositioning of two cytoplasmic kinase domains in a face to face manner that facilitates trans-autophosphorylation on regulatory sites within the activation segment. Phosphorylation enables nucleotide binding which in turn enables a back-to-back dimer configuration, generating a large catalytic surface that is fully competent for ribonuclease function.

*"oligomerization" has been deleted in next release of the complex portal.
