slight rejig of "mitotic chromosome movement towards spindle pole" and ntr #13542

GO:0007079 mitotic chromosome movement towards spindle pole Def:The cell cycle process in which the directed movement of chromosomes from the center of the spindle towards the spindle poles occurs. This mediates by the shortening of microtubules attached to the chromosomes, during mitosis.

but mitotic chromosomses also move towards the spindle pole during chromosome recapture (when chromsomes become detached from the spindle pole body (also called "kinetochore loss")

So this should be renamed mitotic chromosome movement towards spindle pole after chromosome separation

GO:1990942 mitotic metaphase chromosome recapture Is also an instance of "mitotic chromosome movement towards spindle pole"

So we could have a term "mitotic chromosome movement towards spindle pole" which is a parent of both?

This might be useful because these processes probably use different kinesin etc, and also it would help curators to select the correct term, as this can be a bit confusing if you aren't familiar with it.

There are 2 types of "chromosome movement towards the spindle pole" that occur during chromosome segregation.

One type occurs before chromosome separation, when kinetochores/chromosomes become unattached and need to be recaptured and "reeled in" (see fig above). This occurs before biorientation

The second type mitotic chromosome movement towards spindle pole after chromosome separation

is the moving apart of chromosmes after separation (i.e after cohesin is cleaved)

The above ref can be used because it shows a figure which differentiates the 2 clearly

Coming back to this: so it seems to me that the definition of the term you request for a name change needs to have "after chromosome separation" added to it also? And how will this effect all existing annotations.

This term NTR:mitotic chromosome movement towards spindle pole is not always after chromosome separation. "chromosome recapture" is a type of chromosome to spindle pole movement that occurs BEFORE chromosome separation. It's a mechanism to correct problems when chromosomes are become detached from the SPB before biorientation.

I agree with @ValWood that these two processes serve different functions, but it makes sense to have a common parent term. Specifically in PMID:27146110 the mechanism driving mitotic metaphase chromosome recapture and mitotic chromosome movement towards ... are the same.

Simply put, when chromatid pairs are biattached, the kinetochore microtubules pull on them from both spindle poles, which creates tension on the attachment and makes it stable (this is a unique property of kinetochore attachments, in which tension increases the strength of the bond).

In addition to the effect on the attachment, tension prevents microtubule catastrophe (prevents microtubules from switching from growth to shrinkage). Microtubule catastrophe is also length-dependent thanks to kinesin-8 (longer microtubules are more likely to switch from growht to shrinkage).

So we have three scenarios:

So the mechanisms driving the movement can be the same, although I am sure there is diversity of mechanisms, for example in animal cells there is also depolymerisation of microtubules at their minus ends that is different before and after cohesin cleavage, if I remember correctly.
