If it is agreed that the term "hindbrain development' be created, I would like to argue that we should also create "midbrain development" and "forbrain development". If all three terms can be created, the zebrafish annotators would smile. It sometimes looks like ALL zebrafish genes are involved in brain development! In any case, I'll gladly produce definitions etc for the forbrain and midbrain terms if they can be created also.

Yes, we can do all three terms -- especially of you suggest definitions (thanks!).

I will put together definitions and other info for the forebrain and midbrain terms this week.

Term: midbrain development
Def: Development of the middle division of the three primary divisions of the developing vertebrate brain or the corresponding part of the adult brain that includes a ventral part containing the cerebral peduncles and a dorsal tectum containing the corpora quadrigemina and that surrounds the aqueduct of Sylvius connecting the third and fourth ventricles.
Synonym: mesencephalon development
Term: forebrain development
Def: Development of the the anterior of the three primary divisions of the developing vertebrate brain or the corresponding part of the adult brain that includes especially the cerebral hemispheres, the thalamus, and the hypothalamus and that especially in higher vertebrates is the main control center for sensory and associative information processing, visceral functions, and voluntary motor functions
Synonym: prosencephalon development
General Comment: These definitions limit the use of the terms to vertebrates. Should these be "sensu Vertebrata" terms, or be placed under the new term 'brain development (sensu vertebrata)', or will they be OK as children of brain development? Also, I'm not sure if there are invertebrates that have analogous structures they would like to annotate to. If so, the placement and definitions need to be broadened to include non-vertebrates.

two possibilities sent to the list:
simplest option:
<central nervous system development ; GO:0007417 -<brain development ; GO:0007420 --<central complex development ; GO:0048036 ; synonym:central body development --<mushroom body development ; GO:0016319 --<forebrain development ; GO:new ; synonym:prosencephalon development --<midbrain development ; GO:new ; synonym:mesencephalon development --<hindbrain development ; GO:new ; synonym:rhombencephalon development
more complicated:
<central nervous system development ; GO:0007417 -<brain development ; GO:0007420 --%brain development (sensu Chordata); GO:new ---<forebrain development ; GO:new ; synonym:prosencephalon development ---<midbrain development ; GO:new ; synonym:mesencephalon development ---<hindbrain development ; GO:new ; synonym:rhombencephalon development --%brain development (sensu Insecta) ; GO:new ---<central complex development ; GO:0048036 ; synonym:central body development ---<mushroom body development ; GO:0016319
will implement the one that wins the vote

In light of Suzi's comment in the list regarding the use of sensu, I looked at the terms again. I think Midori's more complicated structure would work. However, unless there is an argument that 'brain development' in a broad sense is different in Insects and Chordates, wouldn't it be OK to have only one 'brain development' term, and have the fore-, mid-, and hind-brain terms as well as the central complex and mushroom body terms as children?

I see that the actual proposed ontology bits mysteriously disappeared. I'll try again below, but if they still don't appear, check the email archive.
Meanwhile, I'll implement the simpler structure, just to get the fore/mid/hindbrain terms in. We can go back and convert to something more complex later if the need arises.
simple option: <central nervous system development ; GO:0007417 -<brain development ; GO:0007420 --<central complex development ; GO:0048036 ; synonym:central body development --<mushroom body development ; GO:0016319 --<forebrain development ; GO:new ; synonym:prosencephalon development --<midbrain development ; GO:new ; synonym:mesencephalon development --<hindbrain development ; GO:new ; synonym:rhombencephalon development
complicated option: <central nervous system development ; GO:0007417 -<brain development ; GO:0007420 --%brain development (sensu Chordata); GO:new ---<forebrain development ; GO:new ; synonym:prosencephalon development ---<midbrain development ; GO:new ; synonym:mesencephalon development ---<hindbrain development ; GO:new ; synonym:rhombencephalon development --%brain development (sensu Insecta) ; GO:new ---<central complex development ; GO:0048036 ; synonym:central body development ---<mushroom body development ; GO:0016319

implemented 'simpler' brain development structure for now
added GO:0030900 forebrain development GO:0030900 midbrain development GO:0030902 hindbrain development
as part-of children of brain development (GO:0007420)

No one has requested the 'complicated' option, so I'll close this item. We can revisit if some or all of the more elaborate structure is required later.

Hi,
Could I request the new process term "hindbrain development", as a child of brain development (GO:0007420 ).
Definition: Development of the hindbrain, the posterior division of the three primary divisions of the developing vertebrate brain or the corresponding part of the adult brain that includes the cerebellum, pons, and medulla oblongata and that controls the autonomic functions and equilibrium.
(definition obtained from medline plus:
http://www2.merriam-webster.com/cgi-bin/mwmednlm? book=Medical&va=hindbrain )
Synonym: rhombencephalon development
Pubmed literature reference: 11262231
Thanks,
Emily
