my suggestion is for including the following statement depending on the term. Just giving the reaction may not serve the purpose of teaching the non-biochemist.
"phosphorylation" and/or "dephosphorylation" of the serine/threonine residue in a protein molecule
and may inlcude "this activity is shown by the proteins often carrying the LRR domians and those involved in defense/signal transduction pathways".

Hi Pankaj, These defs sound a little process-like, but I'm happy to add sentences rather than a reaction. eg Catalysis of the removal/addition of a phosphate group from/to a serine or threonine residue in a protein molecule.
The definitions for the protein tyrosine kinase terms are currently reactions (from the EC site) and I think if we change the serine/threonine kinase defs to sentences, the same should be done for the tyrosine kinase defs.
Thanks, Becky

Fixed. Kept the definitions as reactions to be consistent with other function terms, particularly protein-tyrosine kinase activity ; GO:0004713 etc.
Therefore the new definitions are as follows: term: protein serine/threonine kinase activity goid: GO:0004674 Catalysis of the reaction: ATP + a protein serine/threonine = ADP + protein serine/threonine phosphate. definition_reference: FB:bf # term: protein serine/threonine phosphatase activity goid: GO:0004722 Catalysis of the reaction: protein serine/threonine phosphate + H2O = protein serine/threonine + phosphate. definition_reference: FB:bf # term: protein serine/threonine phosphatase complex goid: GO:0008287 A complex, normally consisting of a catalytic and a regulatory subunit, which catalyzes the removal of a phosphate group from a serine or threonine residue of a protein. definition_reference: FB:bf

Gillian, (a FB curator) pointed out that some of the protein kinase definitions need a little tweaking:
term: protein serine/threonine kinase activity goid: GO:0004674 definition: Catalysis of the reaction: ATP + a protein = ADP + a phosphoprotein. definition_reference: EC:2.7.1.37 > Catalysis of the reaction: ATP + a protein serine/threonine = ADP + protein serine/threonine phosphate.
[to be consistent with protein-tyrosine kinase activity ; GO:0004713]
term: protein serine/threonine phosphatase activity goid: GO:0004722 definition: Catalysis of the reaction: a phosphoprotein
[to be consistent with protein-tyrosine phosphatase activity ; GO:0004725]
term: protein serine/threonine phosphatase complex goid: GO:0008287 definition: An enzyme that catalyzes the removal of a phosphate group from a protein. definition_reference: EC:3.1.3.16 > A complex, often consisting of a catalytic and a regulatory subunit, which catalyzes the removal of a phosphate group from a serine or threonine residue of a protein.
