Looking at the definitions for the actin terms, I think 'stabilization' is the same as 'negative regulation of depolymerization' and 'destabilization' is 'positive regulation of depolymerization'. (Slightly embarrassing, cos I added both, tho at least not at the same time ...) I'm going to merge the actin terms, rename 'microtubule stabilization' to 'negative regulation of microtubule depolymerization', and add new terms for microtubules using the 'regulation' wording (they'll have stabilization/destabilization synonyms).
One more thing - we're trying to stamp out 'and/or', so the new parent term will just have 'or'.

done:
added microtubule polymerization or depolymerization GO:0031109, is_a microtubule cytoskeleton organization and biogenesis (226) regulation of microtubule polymerization or depolymerization GO:0031110 negative regulation of microtubule polymerization or depolymerization GO: 0031111 positive regulation of microtubule polymerization or depolymerization GO: 0031112 regulation of microtubule polymerization GO:0031113 regulation of microtubule depolymerization GO:0031114 negative regulation of microtubule polymerization GO:0031115 positive regulation of microtubule polymerization GO:0031116 positive regulation of microtubule depolymerization GO:0031117 ; synonym: microtubule destabilization (this is the one Gillian will want)
renamed GO:0007026 from microtubule stabilization to negative regulation of microtubule depolymerization (keeping old wording as exact synonym)
moved microtubule polymerization (7019) and microtubule depolymerization (46875) under 31109
merges: actin filament destabilization (30045) into positive regulation of actin filament depolymerization (30836) actin filament stabilization (30044) into negative regulation of actin filament depolymerization (30835)

Hi,
A new term request/edit from Gillian at FB:
The gene from the paper she is curating decreases microtubule stability.
In the actin node we have:
actin-filament-based process --%actin polymerization and/or depolymerization ----<regulation of actin polymerization and/or depolymerization ------%actin filament destabilization ------%actin filament stabilization ------%regulation of actin filament polymerization --------%negative regulation of actin filament polymerization --------%positive regulation of actin filament polymerization ----%actin filament depolymerization ----%actin filament polymerization
in the microtubule node we have:
microtubule-based process --%microtubule cytoskeleton organization and biogenesis ----%microtubule stabilization --%microtubule polymerization --%microtubule depolymerization --%microtubule severing
The definition of microtubule stabilization ; GO:0007026 is: "Prevention of depolymerization of a microtubule; can result from binding by 'capping' at the plus end (e.g. by interaction with another cellular protein of structure) or by exposing microtubules to a stabilizing drug such as taxol."
Which suggests that microtubule stabilization should be linked to the microtubule depolymerization term. Therefore, should the microtubule terms be made similar to the actin terms. eg something like:
microtubule-based process --%microtubule cytoskeleton organization and biogenesis ----%microtubule stabilization --%microtubule polymerization and/or depolymerization ; GO:new ----<regulation of microtubule polymerization and/or depolymerization ; GO:new ------<microtubule stabilization ------<microtubule destablization ; GO:new ----%microtubule polymerization ----%microtubule depolymerization
thanks, Becky
