Problem definition (and term) protein retention in Golgi apparatus #23596

GO:0045053 protein retention in Golgi apparatus Biological Process

Definition The retention of proteins within the Golgi apparatus. Golgi-localized carbohydrate-modifying enzymes have a short N-terminal domain that faces the cytosol, a single transmembrane alpha helix, and a large C-terminal domain that faces the Golgi lumen and that contains the catalytic site. How the membrane-spanning alpha helix in a Golgi enzyme causes its localization and prevents its movement to the plasma membrane is not known.

I think this term is probably generally used for the regulatory pathway that holds cargo proteins in the Golgi until they are required on the cell surface (such as the ubiquitin ligase Pub1).

However, the gloss is about retention signals in Golgi resident proteins (this should not be annotated as a process, it would be like annotating a protein with a TM domain to retention in the membrane.)

I suggest obsoleting the term (2 meanings)

Note that the term also seems to be used for "retrograde transport" (i.e recycling) which is also another term.

I am blocking this GO term for PomBAse today so I won't report the PAINT mappings as hopefully they will disappear.
