sterol_regulatory_element SO:0001861

Parent term name and accession promoter_element SO:0001659 REMOVE this term

Suggested new parent term name and accession TF_binding_site SO_0000235 DNA_motif SO_0000713 response_element SO_0002205

revise definition to: A 10-bp element bound by sterol regulatory element binding proteins (SREBPs), found in RNA polymerase II transcriptional cis-regulatory regions of genes involved in sterol metabolism. Many variants of the sequence ATCACCCCAC function as SREs.

Reason for the change The SRE is not only present in the promoter region (where the promoter is defined as binding the transcription machinery - SRE is bound by dbTFs that are not part of the transcription machinery as defined by GO). In addition it might be good to refine the definition of the E-box to cover E-box related motifs, especially as the sequence in the current definition is very loose: Consensus sequence is AWCAGCTGWT.

Note that wikipedia states: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sterol_regulatory_element-binding_protein: Sterol regulatory element sequence TCACNCCAC.PMID: 2298751

PMID: 26321664: states: Here we performed a detailed promoter/enhancer analysis of human ELOVL5 gene, and identified two new SREBP binding sites, one in the 10 kb upstream region and one in the exon 1.

Add Relevant Publications PMID: 26321664 - SRE in enhancer

add synonyms: SRE sterol regulatory element
