Anaplasma phagocytophilum surface protein: Asp14 is a bacterial surface protein that binds to its host receptor, the P-selectin glycoprotein ligand 1. The region sufficient for adherence and invasion is within the positively charged C-terminal 24 amino acids (residues 101-124) [PMID23071137].
Outer membrane protein A: OmpA (APH_0388) is transcriptionally induced in A. phagocytophilum infecting ticks when those ticks feed on mice. It is also upregulated during invasion of HL-60 cells. OmpA is a peptidoglycan-associated lipoprotein. Recombinant OmpA binds to host cells via sialyated glycoproteins [PMID22907813]. The OmpA binding region consists of residues 59-74 [PMID25658707].
Protective antigen from Bacillus anthracis: Protective antigen (PA) is necessary for the intracellular delivery of both lethal factor and edema factor. In combination with PA, lethal factor is lethal toxin (LT) and edema factor is edema toxin (ET). PA is the essential component of anthrax vaccine. It mediates entry via either of two receptors. Lethal toxin, 710 kDa is formed when up to three molecules of LF bind a heptamer of protective antigen. It associates with both human tumor endothelial cell marker (TEM8) and human capillary morphogenesis protein 2 (CMG2)[PMID22219086].
Aggregative adherence fimbriae I from Escherichia coli: AAF/I of enteroaggregative Escherichia coli (EAEC) are encoded on a large pAA plasmid along with other virulence factors [PMID15687877]. They assemble on the bacterial surface through the usher-chaperone pathway/secretion system [PMID22411982]. They consist of a positively charged major subunit and a minor subunit. They associate with human MUC1 which is also a receptor for P. aeruginosa, C. jejuni, and H. pylori [PMID28588132].
Nonfimbrial adhesin E-2 (NfaE-2) of Escherichia coli: NfaE is a Dr (diarrheal) adhesin that associates with decay accelerating factor (DAF) on host cell surfaces. DAF/CD55 is a complement regulatory protein that protects tissues from damage by complement by inhibiting the formation of C3 and C5 convertases and accelerating their decay [PMID7511675]. NfaE-2 binds to CCP-3 and CCP-4 of DAF in a manner that is less dependent on electrostatic interactions than other Dr adhesins [PMID16751628].
Helicobacter outer protein Q (HopQ): HopQ is an outer membrane adhesin that binds to host CEACAM receptors expressed on the gastric epithelium. The interaction is essential for pathogenesis as it is required for the T4SS-mediated translocation of CagA into gastric epithelial cells [PMID27748768][PMID27748756][PMID30365569].
Internalin B (InlB) from Listeria monocytogenes: The principal receptor for Internalin_B is the host hepatocyte growth factor/scatter factor receptor called Met. Internalin_B binds host Met through the concave surface of its leucine rich repeat region [PMID15487949].
Clumping factor B (ClfB) from Staphylococcus aureus: Attachment of S. aureus to the anterior nares during colonization is enhanced by ClfB binding to the cornified envelope. It promotes nasal colonization in both humans and rodents [PMID26901227]. ClfB binds to host plasma fibrinogen [PMID18227259]. ClfB binds to host cytokeratin 10 [PMID15385531]. ClfB binds to host loricrin [PMID8207091].
Extracellular adherence protein (EAP) from Staphylococcus aureus: EAP can mediate attachment to different host collagen types. It binds preferentially to fibrillar collagen released from tight packing. This situation obtains in inflamed regions where tissue remodeling is occurring at high rates [PMID16522365]. In vitro, EAP associates with the host adhesive proteins intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), fibrinogen, or vitronectin. In doing so, it disrupts beta2-integrin and urokinase receptor mediated leukocyte adhesion [PMID16242332]. At least seven plasma proteins associate with EAP. EAP can bind to the bacterial surface, both to itself and to other proteins [PMID14523103].
Beta protein (C protein beta antigen; IgA-binding beta antigen; Bac; betaC) from Streptococcus: Streptococci bind to human siglec-5 on the surface of human neutrophils in a sialic acid-independent manner via a specific beta protein anchored to the bacterial cell wall to down-regulate immune responsiveness. Group B Streptococcus binding to human siglec-5 expressed on the cell surface is dependent on the beta protein. An isogenic mutant deficient in the beta protein (ΔBac) lost the ability to bind to human siglec-5 [PMID19596804].
Pneumococcal adherence and virulence factor B (PavB): PavB and PspC recruit human matricellular glycoprotein thrombospondin-1 (hTSP-1) to the streptococcal surface. This binding increases bacterial adhesion and invasion into epithelial and endothelial cells [PMID25897078]. PavB contributes to host cell adherence which contributes to pneumococcal colonization via respiratory airways [PMID20444103].
Low calcium response V antigen (LcrV) from Yersinia pestis: LcrV is the needle cap protein of the Y. pestis T3SS. It binds to the N-formylpeptide receptor (FPRI) on human immune cells to promote the translocation of bacterial effectors [PMID31534221].
