Annotatiosn for a gene product required the terms regulation of myelination (already requested) and of oligodendrocyte differentiation

PMID: 15139015

Astrocytes and oligodendrocytes are types of glial (neuroglia) cells that are involved in providing support and nutrition, maintaining homeostasis and participating in signal transduction (the former) and in myelinating the axons of neurons in the CNS (the latter).

GO only has astrocye activation and nothing on oligodendrocyte

Proposed new terms GO:0010001 - glial cell differentiation GO:new - astrocyte differentaition GO:new - oligodendrocyte differentiation GO:0045685 - regulation of glial cell differentiation GO:new - regulation of astrocyte differentiation GO:new - regulation of oligodendrocye differentiation GO:0045686 - negative regulation of glial cell differentiation GO:new - negative regulation of astrocyte differentiation GO:new - negative regulation of oligodendrocyte differentiation GO:0045687 - positive regulation of glial cell differentiation GO:new - positive regulation of astrocyte differentiation GO:new positive regulation of oligodendrocyte differentiation

Definitions for the new terms. GO:new- astrocyte differentiation The process whereby a relatively unspecialized cell acquires the specialized features of an astrocyte, the most abundant type of glial cell. Astrocytes provide support for neurons and regulate the environment in which they function. GO:new - oligodendrocyte differentaition The process whereby a relatively unspecialized cell acquires the specialized features of an oligodendrocye, a type of glial cell involved in myelinating the axons of neurons in the central nervous system. GO:new - regulation of astrocyte differentiation Any process that modulates the frequency, rate or extent of astrocyte differentiation GO:new - regulation of oligodendrocyte differentiation Any process that modulates the frequency, rate or extent of oligodendrocyte differentiation GO:new - negative regulation of astrocyte differentiation Any process that stops, prevents or reduces the rate of astrocyte differentiation GO:new - negative regulation of oligodendrocyte differentiation Ahy process that stops, prevents or reduces the rate of oligodendrocyte differentiation GO:new - positive regulation of astrocyte differentiation Any process that activates or increases the rate of astrocyte differentiation GO:new - positive regulation of oligodendrocyte differentaition Any process that activates or increases the rate of oligodendrocyte differentaition
